Internet searching bad for environment?
A news report in London's Telegraph newspaper suggests that two Google searches produce the same CO2 as boiling a kettle. The research was conducted by physicist Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross of Harvard University. Wissner-Gross's research Google searchconcluded that a typical search through Google is thought to generate about 7g of carbon dioxide. Boiling a kettle produces about 15g. The emissions are caused by the hydro required to power a user's computer and send their search requests to servers. It should be noted, however, that Wissner-Gross's research appears to target online searching in general. Dr. Wissner-Gross writes: "Websites are provided by servers and are viewed by visitors' computers that are connected via networks. These servers, clients and networks all require electricity in order to run, electricity that is largely generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. When fossil fuels are burned, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, which contribute to climate change."
